A charity founded in 1965 to save buildings of historic interest and architectural importance, offering some of the UK's most memorable rental properties from converted pigsties to castles.

No of Properties

170.

Location

Largely in the UK with one in the US and four in Italy.

Style

Furnishings are often antique and in excellent taste, without anything superfluous (Spartan elegance is one judgement). Kitchens are modern, in larger Landmarks usually with a dishwasher and freezer. TVs are not installed but books relevant to the property's history and jigsaws are provided. Well behaved children are always welcome but open stairs, water etc might make some properties unsuitable. Staff are helpful in locating an appropriate one for your needs.

Linen

Included, including towels and tea towels.

Heating

Included but not fuel for open fires.

Facilities

Cots are available at around 80% of properties. No high chairs.

Extra

The log books, generally written up with enthusiasm, confirm the existence of a community of committed visitors who pass tips to each other with enthusiasm. A file covering the history and restoration of each property offers a further and fascinating insight into each property. The selection of books (see above) is paarticularly good.

Short Breaks

Three or four nights are bookable all year except high summer, Christmas and New Year and bank holiday weekends.

Sample Price

£540 for a property with two bedrooms for a week over the May Bank Holiday. Full details of properties are available in the handbook which costs £9.50, refundable against a booking.
