Tips from those who have done it

  • Eat readymade. If you need an excuse, reckon that savings on the fuel bill can be set against the cost. If you don't want to use M&S, one of the growing band of small caterers could help.


  • If you prefer to budget more carefully, plan the entire week's meals in advance, visit a supermarket on arrival to stock up, and accept no ifs and buts about the daily menu.


  • If sharing with another family you will have to allocate the best bedroom. To avoid regretting your politeness later, one idea is to swap half way through.


  • If you are friends with the parents but don't know the children, beware. You may encounter differences over discipline and table manners. Two smaller properties next door might be the answer and there are growing number of properties, for example on farms, which can provide for this in selections of converted outhouses.
