SPEC

Wilderness Safaris http://www.wilderness-safaris.com

Botswana (no postal address or phone contact is provided)

An operation with a keen sense of social and environmental responsibility. Offers a number of specialist safaris, including some for families. The operator has introduced family rooms in a number of camps and has lowered the age limit for its camps to eight (unless the family books the whole camp), as long as the family takes a private vehicle for game drives. The family rooms will consist of an extra tent on the back or side of the existing bathroom tent and no single supplement will be charged if there is only one child in the second tent/room. Camps where this is available are: Botswana; Kings Pool, Vumbura, and Pom Pom: Namibia; Kulala Desert Lodge (no age restriction), Kulala Tented Camp (no age restriction), Damaraland Camp Ongava Tented Camp (probably- to be confirmed);
Zimbabwe; Little Makalolo: South Africa, Rocktail Bay Lodge (no age restriction).

Recommendations

Malawi, which considers ideally suited to family safaris with a range of activities suitable for children of 6+. ‘We place a special emphasis on keeping all the activities fun and educational, and having a flexible approach to each travelling day, incorporating plenty of stops en route. Mvuu and Chintheche are able at no extra charge to put on all sorts of extra activities-perhaps a fishing trip at Chintheche with the local fishermen, a night boat trip at Mvuu etc.' the programme includes two nights at Luwawa Lodge, two at Kazuni Camp, three nights Chelinda Camp, three nights Chintheche Lodge, three nights Mvuu Lodge, and one night in Lilongwe.
An alternative is in Botswana with three nights at Chitabe, and two nights Xigera.

Sample Price

For the Malawi trip US$ 2,555 Lilongwe to Lilongwe, children 11 years and younger pay 50 %). Prices for the Botswana trip are US$2,480 per adult, US$1,680 per child sharing, Maun to Maun.
