A safari is in many ways a child's dream holiday. There's a chance to see all the big animals which feature so prominently in children's books. What's more they are not in a zoo but at home in the wild ? a real step up from the tame experience of a wildlife park in Europe.

And, although these destinations are long-haul, travel to them is less painful than might be imagined because there is only around an hour or two's time difference between Europe and most African destinations. As a further incentive, time spent viewing animals can be combined with lazing around at the beach.

Even better news for families, the absence of visitors from the US is encouraging more and more operators to offer a more positive welcome to a group sometimes accepted rather less willingingly.
