A US company started in 1978 by a couple who had worked as teachers in Nepal, expanding into family journeys when they became parents. They now operate in more than 60 countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Pacific.

What and Where

Families can join some of the options on the main expedition schedule - they are graded according to difficulty so it's easy to choose which might be appropriate for your family. Journeys International can then advise on whether there are other children of suitable ages on the trip. This company also runs tours specifically designed for groups of three to six families with school-age children. These tend to book up early and options include Costa Rica, Belize, the Galapagos Islands, Tanzania, Kenya, the Galapagos Islands, Peru, Panama, Greece, Turkey, Thailand, China and Australia. All trips include close-up encounters with wildlife or with different cultures. The Incas and Amazon tour in Peru, for example, includes the opportunity to meet local Quechua people, to take the train or hike to Machu Picchu, and to view thousands of macaws on the Tambopata River. On the Secrets of Siam tour in Thailand you can ride elephants, visit tribal villages, learn cooking and arts. Journeys International can also tailormake holidays for families.
