Responding to customer feedback (and the MD's experience of travelling with his own daughter) Tucan has a family programme with tours of ten days to two weeks. ‘Many travellers comment that the unexpected highlight of their trip was the friendliness and spirit of the people and travelling with children in Latin America will vastly increase your interaction with the locals. The magnetism and curiosity of children will break down the barriers that can sometimes exist between adults and you will find it much easier to meet the locals on their own level, with their own families. Travelling with children in Latin America is a very rewarding experience and you can be sure that your family will be taken to the hearts of the local people.'

What and Where

All family travel tours take place in Peru. There are three group trips to choose from - the nine-night Llamas & Incas trip, the ten-night Reed Boats & Ruins and the thirteen-night Perfect Peru. The average group size is between 10-15 with a maximum of 20. All trips are soft adventure with experiences of new cultures. Family tours use a variety of transport including locally-hired vehicles, trains and motorised dug-out canoes. Tucan tries to keep travelling times to a minimum whenever possible. To keep families busy (but not flat out) there is a mixture of activities and options such as a ride in a reed boat (Lake Titicaca), horse riding, cycling, jungle excursions and easy walking. Hotels are a mixture of 2 and 3 stars with en suite rooms, usually on a twin share basis. However, families of three or five are usually accommodated in triple or twin rooms, wherever possible. Tours are led by experienced crew members. It may be possible to organise occasional childminding at some hotels, but this is not the main pattern of the holiday.

Minimum Age

6 and up. Tucan finds that this is when children are more aware of their surroundings, are keener to learn and are physically more robust.

Sample Price

The 13-night Perfect Peru trip costs £690 for both adults and children, plus a US$190 local payment; flights extra.
