UK passport holders are covered by Australia's national health insurance, Medicare. This covers immediately necessary treatment, but not dental care, ambulance services or repatriation in the case of illness or injury. As usual therefore, insurance is wise.

Standard swimsuits and parents who don't cover children against the sun get strange looks.
A hat and shirt with collar and sleeves are a norm, as are the beach Lycra ranges which originated here. You will also want high factor sunscreen though the sun is best avoided 10am to 2pm when strongest. Local TV weather forecasts will generally include burn time.

Mosquitoes can be a problem in summer so take repellent.
