Holidays by Destination Australasia Australia Attitudes to Children

The whole point of Australia is to get out and about and eating places and other attractions now generally expect children to be part of that (learning from the Asian, Greek and Italian immigrant families seen out on Sundays). This usually applies even in the evening unless somewhere very flash. High chairs are common, even in cafes. Usefully, there is a strong no-smoking lobby.

Play

Each suburb in the cities has a well equipped play area and resorts are well supplied though obviously, this does not extend to the less developed areas.

Baby changing Facilities

Department stores and most shopping centres plus places like MacDonalds.

Buggies

Not too difficult in the cities, especially as life here tends to involve the outdoors or at least open doors. In the great outdoors you'd need a sling, backpack or rugged three-wheeler with large wheels.

Breastfeeding

Government funding for lactation consultants (expert midwife breastfeeding counsellors) plus the efforts of the Nursing Mothers Association mean this should not in be a problem. (Places which object are highlighted in the papers.)

Babysitting

Dial an Angel http://www.dialanangel.com offers nannying babysitting service with screened carers in the NSW area. There are more agencies including specialist babysitters at bubhub http://www.nsw.bubhub.com.au, with different directories for each state.

Baby Stuff

One reader has recommended Huggies as the best brand though there are others including My Bear, Bebes, BabyLove, Snuggems Snugglers and VIPs.
There are Nestle and Heinz babyfoods and Only Organic, an additive-free range.
