Holidays by Destination Europe Spain Canaries When to Go

Around 60 miles from the Moroccan coast, cool and moist trade winds make the islands considerably more comfortable than might be expected at that latitude though there are occasional hot and dry winds from the direction of the Sahara. They are generally known for winter sun but are hospitable year round.

Temperatures in January range between 14 and 22ºc in Las Palmas, and rise to 21-37ºc in August. In Tenerife temperatures tend to be between 20 and 24ºc year round.

Though not common, there are stormy periods in winter, and fog in summer months. However, hours of sun average six per day in winter and up to 11 in summer. There may be wind August, September, October and north shores being more exposed to this, they tend to be wetter, as does higher ground. The flatter, easterly islands tend to be drier.

Sea water temperatures generally average 18ºc in winter and 24ºc in summer, though they can rise to 30ºc.
