A non profit making educational trust set up by Chris Green who organised Colony Holidays for School Children in the ‘60s. ATE is run by a council of representatives from all the major educational associations. Its aim is to get children away from the commercialism of everyday life and doing simple and fun activities in a countryside setting and offering something different from the standard outdoor pursuits options, and getting children from different backgrounds to spend time together. The weeks are based largely in boarding schools but also a Borders Castle and the Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales. Has participated in a Big Lottery-funded scheme called Get REAL under which youngsters are encouraged to spend part of their school holidays away from home in a residential session and so meet children from other parts of Britain and other backgrounds.
