A non profit making educational trust set up by Chris Green who organised Colony Holidays for School Children in the ‘60s. ATE is run by a council of representatives from all the major educational associations. Its aim is to get children away from the commercialism of everyday life and doing simple and fun activities in a countryside setting and offering something different from the standard outdoor pursuits options, and getting children from different backgrounds to spend time together. The weeks are based largely in boarding schools but also a Borders Castle and the Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales. Has participated in a Big Lottery-funded scheme called Get REAL under which youngsters are encouraged to spend part of their school holidays away from home in a residential session and so meet children from other parts of Britain and other backgrounds. Operating Since1997. Age Groups8-11, 8-12, 9-12, 9-13, 10-14, 11-14, 11-15, 12-14, 14-15, 15-16 , depending on holiday. Size of Groups8/9 children. Total per Centre36 - 70. Carer to Child RatiosEach group of children has one monitor who is 17 - 25 and spends the entire day, including relaxation time, with them. Staff Checks and QualificationsAll CRB checked and have attended compulsory in-house residential course(s). Also in-house staff training and regular assessments. Location of CentresDevon, Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Northumberland, Nottinghamshire, Shropshire, Wales. DatesEaster school holidays and late July to end August. Supervision24-hour. ActivitiesChildren might find themselves playing unusual ball games, cracking codes and following treasure maps, shouting as loud as they can, trying not to be seen or heard, putting on a play, solving mysteries, singing songs, making crafts to take home, building dens in the woods, having stories round the fire, going on expeditions and more. Options such as climbing and orienteering depend on facilities available at or near the centre. TV and computer games are not on offer.
