Holidays by Destination Europe Malta When to Go

Average temperatures reach 27ºc in August, dropping to around 12ºc in January. However, daily highs will be notably higher, particularly in the sun. In June, July, August and September temperatures can reach 40ºc. Even so most people visit between May and October and July and August are the busiest months when everything, especially beaches, are very crowded because it's when the Maltese holiday as well.

Late March to early June is a good time to go, the spring being when the island is at its prettiest outside the built-up areas, with wild flowers including wild narcissus and thousands of migrating birds. The only downside is that winds can be high. Autumn is also good, again with lots of birds and sea warmed by the summer. However, there may be rainstorms, particularly in October.

Gozo, never as crowded as Malta, is more seasonal, with some hotels and restaurants shutting from December to as late as March.
