Holidays by Destination Europe Malta Getting Around

The islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino combined are only around half the size of London so getting about is not too difficult. Buses can be slow and are not very comfortable but the network is extensive - on Malta mostly extending from Valletta. Unless you have prior information you have to check with drivers which destinations the bus is serving as they only display numbers.

Self-drive is feasible but hard work given poor driving and badly constructed roads, leading to the highest accident rate in the world.

Taxis are widespread in resort and other central areas but rarely use meters so you have to agree on a price beforehand.

Regular ferries connect the islands or there is a 10-minute helicopter option from the Malta airport, tickets available from the Air Malta desk.

On Gozo there are regular buses or, given that the widest point is just 14km, you can often walk.
