Practicalities Getting Organised Insurance Other ways of Getting Cover

Private medical insurance may include free, if usually limited, travel insurance. Some cover luggage and cancellation cover but others only cover medical expenses and therefore recommend taking out separate travel cover if you want any more than the medical cover.

If you pay by credit card this gives free personal accident cover and the credit card company is jointly liable if the agreed goods or services, costing at least £100, are not supplied. Charge cards like American Express are not bound by the same rules. However, note that personal accident cover only cmpensates in the event of the client's death or permanent disablement but will not cover medical, emergency and repatriation expenses incurred abroad as a result of accident or illness. Nor will it cover members of the client's family - only the cardholder.

If you pay by gold card you will probably get free travel insurance for yourself, your spouse and children, but should check this with your provider.
