Practicalities Health Other Possible Problems Rabies

Rabies is found in animals in Europe and North America as well as less developed countries. For this reason the official blanket recommendation is not to touch animals in case of bites by an infected animal.

It is helpful to make children aware of the issue, noting that it can be spread by licks and scratches as well as bites, and may be in cats and monkeys as well as dogs, plus bats

A ban can be very hard for children who want to pet the restaurant cat or dog for example, and it is clear that it is a recommendation which is ignored, for example in France where zoos and farms offer children's petting areas.

However, it is important with wild animals and in countries, including Italy and Spain, where in some cases even domestic animals may not be well cared for.

Measures to Alleviate

  • Post-exposure treatment, if given early enough, will usually prevent the disease developing. Medical attention is required fast, however, and if you have any problem it is suggested you contact your nearest British Consular official.

  • Recommendations for immediate treatment include using soap or detergent to wash the wound, flushing with clean water and if possible applying alcohol.

  • You should also consult your doctor as soon as you return.
