Practicalities Health Other Possible Problems Prickly Heat

Prickly heat occurs typically on the trunk and neck and is due to the sweat glands becoming blocked, possibly because of unevaporated sweat. The skin becomes inflamed and itches and the condition may turn into eczema.

Similar is a sweat rash, generally in the armpits and groin. This is generally caused by fungal infections which have taken hold in the warm sweat and needs to be treated with a fungicide. Tea Tree Oil is one option.

Measures to Alleviate/Avoid

  • Ensure the skin stays clean and dry.

  • Wear loose-fitting cotton clothes.

  • Take a cool wash as soon as the first prickliness makes itself felt, and at the beginning and end of each day.

  • After washing dry thoroughly and perhaps use a little dusting powder.

  • Try washing with camomile tea or Calamine lotion.
