Holidays by Destination Europe Sweden Stockholm Health

There is a reciprocal health agreement with the UK if you have a stamped E111 form (but as usual we would recommend insurance).

For medical help you go to the nearest hospital for treatment. Note that you will need a prescription for medicines available over the counter elsewhere, such as aspirin. An Apotek will fulfil local prescriptions or those from another EU country if you have a form E111.

While the problem in summer tends to be mosquitoes (for advice on which see the Health section in Practicalities), in winter it is important, especially for children, to keep warm, as temperatures will be around freezing most of the time, even in the city.

Advice is to dress in layers to hold the warmth, preferably in cotton, so you can strip off when you go indoors where it is often baking hot. Good boots with a solid grip are important, as are warm socks, a warm hat (you lose most heat through your head) and reliable mittens or gloves (ideally on string/ribbon to avoid them being lost as you go in and outside).
