Holidays by Destination Europe Sweden Stockholm Getting Around

It takes around half an hour for an adult to walk across central Stockholm so with some organization you don't need to make too much use of public transport. However, islands and bridge connections do mean that it takes a little longer than you would expect at first.

When you do want to make use of public transport a pass is probably the easiest way to do so. Storstockholms Lokaltrafic (SL) runs buses and trains, including the metro across an extensive area. (The metro incidentally includes some interesting decorative sculpture in stations.) Children to 7 years travel free on public transport. Adults can buy a range of public transport cards or strips of tickets. Probably most suitable for tourists is a Tourist Card for 24 hours, full price 80 kr, child price to 18 45 kr; 72 hours full price 150 kr, child price 90 kr.

There are several harbours with ferries and archipelago boats and vintage trams from the centre to Djurgarden island during the summer. Taxis are expensive (Kr100 from the station out to Djurgaden).

The city is well geared up for cyclists with a number of hire places such as Skepp O'Hoj at Galarvarvsvagen 10, or Cykel-och Mopeduthyrningen at Kajplats 24.

An intriguing summer-time option is to hire a canoe or kayak for example from Skepp O'Hoj at Galarvarvsvagen 10, or Tvillingarnas Batuthyrning by Djurgardsbron. Weekend deals are sometimes available. On the archipelago corner shops sometimes have canoes or boats to rent.

Well worth investing in (and included in the price of the Winter Weekend break deals) is the ‘Stockholm Go There Card'. This includes two hour sightseeing tour, entrance to around 70 museums, exhibitions and sights, free local public transport, and a return ticket on the Arlanda Express, the high-speed train link between the airport and the city centre. The card costs Adults 220 kr and children 7-17 years old 60 kr for 24 hours, adults 380 kr, children 7-17 years old 120 kr for 48 hours, and adults 540 kr children 7-17 years old 180 kr for 72 hours. You validate the card from the time you start using it.
Children's cards can be bought only in combination with an adult card (max 2 children's cards per adult card).

Bear in mind that if you want to use the lavatories say in the department stores, you generally have to pay - around 5kr.
