Holidays by Destination Europe Portugal Algarve Attitudes to Children

Very friendly, so much so locals frequently touch small children on the head or offer to pick them up. This is particularly true of young waiters and may be a little too much for some children. On the other hand, nothing is too much trouble if it is for a young child.

Play

There are a few playgrounds in small towns and a few hotels with playgrounds. The big attractions are the water parks: Atalantico Park on the main N125 road at Quarteira, or Aqua Show at Quarteira, Aqualine 7km from Montegordo, Pinguim at Montegordo, Slide & Splash near Lagoa, The Big One on the main road near Silves. There is also the theme/marine park called Zoomarine at Guia near Albufeira.

Baby Changing Facilities

Pretty much non-existent (though offered at the airport) but there is often a charge for ladies' which are therefore clean and the lady in charge may be willing to help.

Buggies

There are cobbles in some town centres and out of the modernised tourist zones there are few pavements. That means the walk from accommodation to beach can feel a little hairy.

Breastfeeding

Not generally seen out and about, though in relaxed holiday surroundings should be OK.

Babysitting

Can be arranged by some operators and some of those operated by hotels at a charge are also open to non-residents - at a price - say €30 per day for over 4s, €60 for babies, in some cases more. Note however that many children's clubs only operate Easter, July and August and some half terms.

Baby Stuff

Nappies (froldas) are available in supermarkets and pharmacies. Dodot (Ausonia) and Monbebe from Kimberly Clark. Sample prices are €9 for 38 4-10kg and €11 for 30 30-18kg. Formula includes Milupa and Nestle, Aptamil HA1 400g is around €7. Babyfoods (including sugar and salt) are available from Nestle, Milupa and Heinz.
