Holidays by Destination Africa Egypt Cairo and Sharm el Sheikh Getting Around

If you come as independent tourists but have booked accommodation through the UK, I would suggest a taxi from the airport. Taxis are plentiful, and cost very little, although tourists are sometimes fleeced. To get to a hotel near the airport or into Heliopolis which is the suburb near the airport, expect to pay around LE30 (£6.00), further afield and you may pay up to LE50 (£10).

Alternatively, a number of hotels run shuttle buses day and night so you could enquire whether yours offers this service.

With children, don't try and overdo things. Balance the Egyptian museum with a camel ride or sailing on a felucca or horse riding around the pyramids. Distances are enormous in Cairo and the traffic is appalling. It makes the M25 look like a picnic.

Take a torch (for looking in tombs), a sewing kit, a small rucksack for use during the day, plus a money belt.
