Cairo and Sharm el Sheikh

A report from a Family Travel reader who has lived in Cairo with her family.

A couple of cultural points: Egyptians are among the best-humoured people in the world and their country is of the most photographed. However, if you want to take a picture of a person, sometimes necessary to ask permission. At many museums, there is a fee for camera and video. Do not use flash inside ancient temples and tombs, it is not only forbidden, but will damage the ancient colours.

Egyptians have different codes of behaviour to those in the West. It is easier for men than women. Men must wear long trousers in mosques and often in other churches too. Do not wear shorts and skimpy T-shirts, especially in downtown Cairo in places such as the Khan el Khalili bazaar, the Egyptian Museum, and Islamic Cairo. These outfits cause offence and attract the kind of attention you do not want.
