Despite in the investment in transport in 2000, traffic congestion continues to mean that on foot is best, at least in the centre. If you need to go further the buses and trams are reasonably efficient. There is also a metro but this is mainly for commuters living in the outer areas. Flat fare tickets of L1,500 are good for any journey of up to 75 minutes though most locals treat the service as a free one. There are also taxis but you need to make sure the meter is switched on.

Though it may be warm in the sun, heating is not what it might be, particularly in places like churches and even more in places like catacombs. What is more, many churches enforce the no bare knees or shoulders rules, particularly the more popular ones. Make sure you have comfortable walking shoes and in summer take hats.

Pickpockets are a real problem so don't take or allow your children to carry much in the way of valuables.
