If you want anywhere decent, book ahead, whatever time of year you are going but especially Easter and over Christmas. This is particularly true of the less luxury options nearer the centre. The more central you are the less you are subject to the traffic and the easier to walk to anywhere you might want to see.

Throughout Rome, streets can be noisy, though less so on some side roads. However, booking at the back is better.

Off season and staying anywhere cheap, check for central heating and/or take extra blankets. Older buildings are not well set up for the cold.
