Trekking
The easiest form of riding holiday, taken at a quiet pace, generally a walk with occasional trotting. Groups are of about 12 riders and the main emphasis is on hilly and scenic surroundings.
Enjoying the surroundings is the main point of the exercise and this is considered suitable for those with no previous riding experience on the assumption that enough instruction will be given to ensure safety.
Hacking
This is at a faster pace with more trotting and probably some cantering. There may be more riding on roads and perhaps less scenic surroundings.
This is considered suitable for all levels or skill on the assumption that the organisers will make sure riders are on horses appropriate to their ability and only quiet riding is allowed until the necessary skills have been learned.
Trail Riding
This is for more experienced riders as they are expected to cover around 25 miles a day at a brisk pace with high proportion of cantering and some galloping. However, guides lead the groups. Riders either return every night to the same accommodation or move on to a new location with their luggage transferred separately. |
