Style

“Britain's finest privately owned hotels” including some very attractive country house hotels, most in 3/4-star categories, one or two ultra-luxurious.

Child Facilities

There has been a significant growth in the number of hotels which welcome children with the majority of the properties now including the children welcome symbol and a decreasing number operating an age limit.
The hotels which specifically welcome children are Calcot Manor, Gloucestershire; St Martin's on the Isle, Isles of Scilly; and Isle of Eriska, near Oban in Argyll.
Other possibilities are Cromlix House, Perthshire, Scotland; Knockinaam Lodge, Wigtownshire, Scotland; Maison Talbooth, Essex; Ockenden Manor, West Sussex; Plumber Manor, Dorset; The French Horn, Berkshire, The Goring, London; Cromlix House, Perthshire; Balbirne House, Fife; The Old Vicarage, Shropshire; Bindon Country House, Somerset; Seaham Hall, Co Durham coast; The Samling, Holbeck Gyll and Gilpin Lodge, all Lake District; The Devonshire Arms Country House Hotel, Yorkshire Dales; The Chester Grosvenor, Chester, Hotel Maesy-neuadd Snowdonia; The Lake Country House, Brecon Beacons; Thornbury Castle, South Gloucesttershire; Northcote Manor North Devon; Congham Hall, North Norfolk; and The Atlantic on Jersey.
Given the quality of the hotels, proprietors rely on parents to ensure that children behave and to know whether they should eat in the restaurant with parents for example. Some insist on high tea.
Of the hotels which accept children, some provide special children's meals, including high tea, babysitting by arrangement, have suitable family rooms and will meet reasonable requests.
St Martin's on the Isle offers seaside pursuits, a chance to watch seals, videos, and a heated pool.
Isle of Eriska offers tennis, croquet and indoor pool, walks and the chance to see badgers and other wildlife.
Calcot Manor is opening a spa in April 2003 to complement all the family rooms, and nannies in the separate building known as the Playzone with different areas for different ages, and supervised teas.
