The malaria endemic in Africa is a more dangerous strain than that in Asia. In addition there is Yellow Fever, something which kills Caucasians if they catch it. Immunisation is available but like all immunisations does not offer 100% protection and in addition is one of the nastier vaccinations, delayed on children even in the UK where vaccinations are given earlier than in many other countries.

In addition there are problems like bilharzia in fresh water, along with numerous other diseases which you may be happy to confront as an adult, but pose more of a danger in those whose immune system is not yet entirely formed.

Travel insurance should include the cost of repatriation. In many parts of the continent medical services are such that you will want to return home ASAP if any kind of significant treatment is required.
