Outside of South Africa and Zimbabwe it is best to be cautious about self-drive. Rules of the road are flexible. While there are tour operators offering safari/camping vehicles, these are generally for use where you will meet little traffic. Elsewhere public transport is probably better though you should take ample supplies of food and water and assume the worst when it comes to loos.
