Holidays by Destination Africa Morocco Getting Around

In towns taxis are plentiful. If there are no more than three of you the ones to use are Petits Taxis. Ask your hotel the going rate.

Grands Taxis (Mercedes) are used for longer journeys and rates are negotiable but should be no more than a fiver a head for four of you travelling for example between Marrakesh and Essaouira. They would offer useful flexibility on a trip to the Ourika Valley from Marrakech for example. However, you may also be able to get a tour with guide for a similar price through the hotel or your operator's local agent.

In Marrakesh there's the option of horse and carriage rides.

Car hire can be arranged with delivery and collection to your hotel. A 4x4 will feel safer if you want to drive off major routes. However note that temperatures in summer are high enough to make breakdowns a distinct possibility, especially as rental vehicles tent to be much more heavily used than is usual in Europe.

Roads are not generally busy and on the main routes are quite good. New routes are opening up. A particularly spectacular option is through the Tizi n'Test pass from Marrakech to Taroudant. However, if you move between centres you need to bear in mind that though the roads are relatively traffic free, they are so winding through the mountains that 35km may take at least an hour. This means that what looks on the map like a relatively swift transfer may mean keeping children in the car for far longer than they enjoy.

Child seats can be requested and may come at no extra charge. However, they do not always come with all the parts. If you need one you would be well advised to take your own.
