Holidays by Destination Europe Switzerland When to Go

Peak season (and a time when it is best to book accommodation in advance) is July to early September when the weather is warmer, or for skiing, over Christmas and New Year, and February to mid-March.

Temperatures obviously fall as you gain height but in Berne for example drop to around -5ºc in January, rising to a maximum average of around 21ºc in July. Of the mountain resorts Davos for example gets colder, dropping to -11ºc in January, and rising to an average maximum of 18ºc in summer. Lugano in the Ticino is much warmer at just -2ºc in January as a minimum, rising to a maximum average of 29ºc in August.
