Holidays by Destination Europe Austria Attitudes to Kids

Vienna has not had a good reputation when it comes to children. Stiff-backed old ladies seem to be the worst offenders in this respect. Even on public transport noisy youth may still be sternly reprimanded. But things are changing.
The city's population is getting younger, is less given to nostalgic formality, and increasing numbers of attractions are offering child tours. City tours are currently in German only, though linguistically able parents could go along to help, but in the Hofburg and Schonbrunn with a day's notice child tours can be laid on in English.
The monthly programme published by the tourist office now includes a Smiling Steffl sign to indicate events that might be of interest to children, useful for picking a suitable concert for example.
Last year 56 hotels took part in a “Two Children Free” programme over the summer (including all those listed here) which may be repeated in ‘98.

Playgrounds

There have been a number of these built around the city in recent years, generally in public parks

Baby Changing Facilities

Still not many but generally in large department stores and shopping centres.

Buggies

Perfectly usable out and about though a little difficult to get on and off trams. However, cafes are not quite used to the idea of them and particularly in the smarter and more central ones you might have a problem finding somewhere to put the buggy while drinking your coffee. Outdoor tables however shouldn't run into this problem.

Breastfeeding

Unless you hole up in a real wholefood outlet, of which there are only a limited number, this is pretty much not on the cards in public, particularly cafes unless discreet, though quieter parks should be OK.

Babysitting

Kinderdrehscheibe tel: 581 0660 offers babysitting, mainly by students, of at least 19 years of age. English-speakers are easily available. They are contactable Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays 10am to 4pm and Tuesdays 10am to 7pm. Bookings are advised at least 24 hours ahead. Prices in hotels are around AS100-150 per hour.

Baby Stuff

International brands of nappies and babyfoods are sold in supermarkets and chemists.
