Attitudes to Children

Holidays by Destination Europe Spain Barcelona Attitudes to Children

A combination of Spanish tolerance of little ones plus a city with a play hard ethic, means that children are found out and about after dark as well as during the day.

Play

These are generally in the more residential areas rather than where tourists are likely to go but there are a few you might pass (see Where to Go).

Baby Changing Facilities

Virtually none though found at the airport.

Buggies

The wide boulevards are fine for buggies which are popular with local parents. However, the standard narrow stairs and narrowish lifts mean that go anywhere inside an umbrella style would be much the most useful type. The Barri Gotic is largely car free so you don't have to worry about squeezing on to narrow pavements but the surface may be uneven, as it is in parts of the Port Vell, where there are cobbles.

Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is not so common. Youthful and pro-child attitudes should make it OK.

Babysitting

Possible at the more expensive hotels - at a price, or via Agencia Rita 453 7034; Serveinen 218 23 87; Clinc Serveis 412 56 76/mobile 908 599 700. Prices are around Pta 1,100 per hour with around Pta for a taxi home. When we rang, none of the agencies had office staff who could speak English though they said they could provide English-speaking sitters. Most are in their 20s, some may be working in primary schools.

Baby Stuff

Found in both pharmacies and supermarket with Heinz, Bledina, Nutriben and Nestle the food brands (all with salt and sugar) nappies Dodotis and Monbebe from Ausonia and a similar Monbebe from Kimberly Clark around Pta1229 for 32 9-15kg, Pta 1231 for 28 13-20kg. Wet wipes are available but not, it seems, trainer pants. Formula brands include Nestle, Nutriben and Miltona.
