TGV to Milan plus Eurostar makes it possible to get to leave Venice at something like 6am (yuk) and be in London by 7.30pm. However, given the changes between trains, this is probably something to tackle only with older children. Prices compare favourably with late booked airline tickets.

Short break operators will do you flights plus accommodation packages, but don't generally offer particularly interesting places to stay.
