Holidays by Destination Europe Italy General Where to Go

The north is the more obviously sophisticated, sometimes tediously so. The northern coastal areas are very heavily developed to appeal to the taste for a urban holiday experience, by the sea. At the same time they may suit those with young children as there are plenty of facilities to cater to them.

In the centre Tuscany is very very popular with foreign visitors, Umbria relatively undiscovered, but areas like the Marches are also worth exploring f you prefer to get somewhere off the beaten track.

South of Rome driving gets notably worse which can be wearing, but the weather is more reliably hot and even tourist areas are less developed.

It is worth being chary of a beach holiday on the Adriatic. It is a relatively enclosed sea which has suffered from the poor pollution record, largely due to pollution run off from neighbouring countries.
