Holidays by Destination Europe France Pas de Calais En route to more glamorous parts of France, British visitors often miss the remarkably undeveloped Cote d'Opale, good for walks and kite flying, and the countryside south of Boulogne which ranges from the deep, lush riversides of the Sept Vallees to the open polders of the Marquenterre, no more than an hour's drive from Calais. Though there are no big sights, these are pleasant and little touristed places to wander. The 7 Vallees Route Du Patrimoine leaflet from tourist offices highlights places of interest. The food, especially seafood, is good, with claims of the highest concentration of Gault et Millau caps and Michelin stars on the Continent. To take home there are the obvious purchases of more food and wine plus, for example, wooden games and furniture. (updated 29 March, 2006) |
