Specialist Reports Special Interest Holidays Safaris Planning the Itinerary

- In general the advice is no more than two or three nights in one camp or lodge and a week on safari in total though others believe that not rushing can work better ? at least three nights per camp ? not trying to do too much on each trip. Safaris can then be followed by a beach holiday. Visiting different game reserves to see different habitats, with a break in between in say, Nairobi or Cape Town, is reported a popular choice.

- On most safaris there will be quite a lot of driving to find the wildlife and you should therefore be cautious about factoring in a lot of driving between lodges though some driving is pretty much inevitable so take stuff for in care entertainment (see Wanted on Voyage under Practicalities). Internal flights will be quicker but you will see more of the country if you go overland so at least one transfer of this kind might be worth including.

- Afterwards there is the beach with options, the cheaper East African resorts on the Kenyan coast, more upmarket options like Zanzibar, or even Indian Ocean islands in a two-centre.

- In southern Africa the swimming may not suit those unused to big rollers and there are sharks (though most beaches are shark-netted). If this is all too much almost all the accommodation, except small b&bs, comes with a pool, and even there slowly but surely providers are beginning to welcome families.
