Holidays by Destination Asia Hong Kong Where to Go

Hong Kong island is the hub of everything and the smartest part of town. The north side is the most densely populated and home to the vast majority of hotels. The Mid Levels and the Peak are for the progressively more affluent residents (higher up is cooler), while the southern side is rather less built up and, although suitable for outings, not nearly as good for transport connections.

Kowloon, the peninsula of the mainland immediately opposite Hong Kong island, is one of the most densely populated areas in the world. Without the island's beaches and Peak to alleviate the intensity of the development, it can feel a bit of a strain. However, the views across to Hong Kong island are excellent and the southern tip, known as Tsimshatsui, is where most tourist accommodation is found.

Based in one of these two areas it is easy to make forays further afield, to the other islands (there are 260 in total though many fewer are inhabited), to the agricultural New Territories to the north, across to the one-time Portuguese enclave of Macau, or even across the border and into China itself.

The public transport system means it is actually quite easy to get around on your own, however, if you wanted to make things really easy you can book guided tours. These are available on the front desk of all hotels and it is best to book these on the spot to fit in with the weather, everyone's energy levels and anything else you have discovered you want to visit as well.
