Holidays by Destination Africa Tunisia Attitudes to Children Children are doted on, making life a little easier for visiting Europeans, though younger and particularly blonder ones may find the extent of physical stroking and patting difficult, and gifts of sweets are a strong likelihood. The tourist industry is increasingly targeting the family market and as well as reductions for children being common, resort hotels are now offering for example children's menus. PlayCatering to families, more hotels are offering some kind of play facilities. There is an amusement park near Tunis called Dah Dah, for locals as much as tourists, Carthage Land in Yasmine Hammamet, and a watter park called the Flipper Park toward Nabeul, and in resorts like Sousse there are amusements like dodgems. Most of the coastal hotels offer some kind of 'animation' for children from about eight years. Run by Tunisian staff, this will be multi-lingual. Baby Changing FacilitiesNot really an option. If you are going to be out and about much you will have to improvise. In resorts you can nip into the loos of a nearby hotel. BuggiesOK in the new resort centres but not easy elsewhere. Backpacks or slings are more practical if you are going to explore, and offer some protection from over enthusiastic locals. BreastfeedingThis should be OK but a quiet corner and discretion, for example with a shawl, is expected. Alternatively the tourist office suggests using the bathroom of any resort hotel. BabysittingGiven how much Tunisians like children, it should be possible to arrange this with hotel staff though the local kids go out with their parents and just fall asleep when the time comes. Baby StuffNappies (predominantly Peaudouce) and baby foods are imported and available in pharmacies at prices generally higher than in the UK. It is therefore best to take what you need. While a few resort shops may sell buckets and spades, toy quality is low so it is better to take your own. |
