Syracuse Language Series, reported the best-selling language software in the UK, suitable for 8 years-plus. Titles include French for the Family and Spanish for the Family, each containing four of the language CD-ROMs and the four programmes in each title covering language learning from children to adults and a Harrap CD-ROM dictionary.
Start Start Deluxe offers three levels for progressive learning from eight-plus, covering speaking (a speed meter lights up as pronunciation improves), listening, reading, vocabulary (learnt through games), conversation (talk with the characters on screen, slow down dialogue and see/hear individual words), pronunciation (record/playback means you can compare yourself to a native speaker) and grammar with CD-ROM material plus a user's manual (useful for computer novices) and a ‘guidebook' something like an old-fashioned textbook with printed back-up to the material and lessons on disc amounting to 48 short lessons. Languages covered include French, Spanish, German, Italian, and ‘Chinese'. Jump Ahead French for ages 5-8 is a preparatory programme for children, designed to develop a foundation for future language learning with activities based round key topics such as Conjuring Numbers, Dressing Bear, Hide and Seek and Exploring Town, developing listening skills, reading comprehension and vocabulary.
