Practicalities Getting Organised Travel in Pregnancy Insurance

Abroad, even where there is a reciprocal healthcare agreement with the UK, it may not be comprehensive and in some places it may be difficult to find a doctor willing to treat under the scheme. For this reason it is wise to get travel insurance.

Check for restrictions on the policy. Some do not provide cover for any condition relating to pregnancy. Others require that there should not be any pre-existing or hereditary problem related to the pregnancy.

There may also be problems on annual policies in the small print. For example you may not be able to claim for cancellation if your due date is within 10 weeks or before the end of the cover.

Should you wish to claim for a pregnancy-related problem which occurred on a trip taken against the advice of a doctor, you might find it difficult. Matters may be different if you had already booked before the doctor advised against travelling.

Travel insurance is in a constant state of flux so we do not list any specific policies or providers. However, among other services you should look for:

  • Cover in pregnancy.

  • An English language phone service.

  • Repatriation if necessary. MEDVAC is the scheme which is generally used to transport you home in an emergency.

  • Extra accommodation and travel expenses for anyone who has to stay on to help.
