Practicalities Getting Organised Travel in Pregnancy General Travel Tips
All the usual advice about health when travelling apply with particular force when pregnant (see Health).
- Only eat very freshly cooked food and avoid dubious supplies of water. If you think there could be problems finding healthy food it may be an idea to take some supplies with you, plus vitamins or other supplements recommended by an experienced practitioner.
- Drink plenty at all times to avoid dehydration and associated constipation (this can be a particular problem if flying). Whenever you are on the move, take snacks and drinks in case you find yourself stranded at any stage.
- Should you get sick, be careful about any drugs you are prescribed and in particular avoid tetracycline antibiotics. Similarly travel sickness medication should only be taken after consultation with your antenatal carer or GP.
- Comfortable clothes are a particularly good idea if you plan a significant amount of sightseeing and as women often feel hotter than usual in pregnancy, cooler clothing than usual may be a good idea. Support tights may be useful but could be too hot in some climates. In addition thrush (an infection causing itching and soreness of the vagina and vulva) is more of a risk in pregnancy and is encouraged by hot, tight clothing, including tights. (Bathing the affected area in live, natural yoghurt is a useful on the spot treatment.)
- As some organisms like Toxocara could enter your bloodstream through a cut in your foot, it is generally considered wise to wear shoes or sandals all the times.
