Tap water is safe and the main hazards are the usual ones of sun and heat. Mosquitoes can be a problem anywhere near fresh water and/or greenery. Jellyfish plagues occur at intervals so it is wise to check the water before entering. Sun protection is vital, especially in the hotter, summer months.

There are both state and private hospitals (St Luke's Hospital on Malta incorporates Karin Grech Hospital for children in Guardamangia) plus pharmacies and health centres in Floriana, Gzira, Qormi, Paola, Cospicua, Mosta, Rabat and Gozo. All paediatricians in Malta are reported UK-trained.

Emergency treatment at the health centres and at the general hospitals is free of charge for tourists staying not more than 30 days. Medication, however, is not free. As usual, insurance is wise.
