Holidays by Destination Europe Italy Tuscany and Umbria When to Go

The unbroken stone of Italian towns and cities traps summer heat. This makes them particularly unsuitable for children in high summer with temperatures of 25oC or more.

In addition many businesses and attraction close down entirely in August, just when trippers create hour-long queues for places like the Uffizzi.

June and September are better bets and earlier and later in the year, if not offering guaranteed warmth, can offer delightful weather.

In the hills like Lunigiana, the finger of Tuscany to the north, spring and autumn temperatures are around 20oC or more and in September and October you will see the grape harvest and mushroom hunting. April tends to see school trips.
