Getting Around

Holidays by Destination Europe Italy Sicily Getting Around

This is the third largest island in the Med and, given the quantity of potential sights and you would have to work hard to do them justice, even in two or three weeks. With children it would be better to pick either a single base to venture out from, or plan a very limited itinerary to take in just those places you are interested in seeing.

Alternatively, there are plenty of places where, if you are happy just to chill out, once you're there you don't need any transport at all. The Lipari islands are a good example but also potentially a number of the main island's resorts.

Public transport does exist, with both train and bus services useable, the former particularly along the north and eastern coasts. However, geography sometimes means the station and the twon are some distance apart. If you plan to explore any of the multiple sights outside the main centres a car would be useful.
