Getting There

Holidays by Destination Europe Italy General Getting There

Flying is generally the most popular method and the budget airlines are increasingly targeting lesser known destinations in Italy and these are well worth considering if you want to try somewhere less well known and with more of a local feel.

If you take a fly drive book your car with a reputable operation. Theft rates of hire cars are particularly high in Italy and the companies seem to do their best to make up for losses by over charging on tanks of petrol and similar scams.

However, train is quite feasible and entertaining, especially if you take a sleeper in which case you go to sleep in norther Europe and wake up to find the red tile roofs of the Mediterranean. Even Motor rail which trundles at freight speeds only takes from around 1pm to 11am the next day to get from Calais to Rome. Passenger trains are considerably faster.
