Accommodation

Holidays by Destination Europe Greece General Accommodation

Greece offers a wide range, from private rooms upwards. The private rooms generally only operate from Easter to October and may be basic but are generally very clean. Hotels vary enormously in quality and grading gives only a rough idea of quality. Broadly you will probably be better in somewhere family-run and smaller or medium-sized as service is not something which features strongly in the Greek attitude to life and without it the larger and more impersonal places can be difficult.

Hotels in resorts are often block booked by tour operators for the summer season so if travelling then you would be best advised to book ahead. At other times you should be able to find something in the bigger centres at short notice, but there is likely to be little open elsewhere.

Broadly speaking, towns on the mainland cater mainly to business visitors and are poor value for money being priced accordingly.

Note that if your hotel relies on rooftop solar units the hot water will run out around 6pm when everyone gets back from the beach. There may be a backup heater but this is not always the case.

Wherever you go, plumbing is designed not to cater to paper waste. Loo paper therefore needs to go into a bin and children may need regular reminders of this.
