Where to Go

Holidays by Destination Europe France The Jura Where to Go

The area is in effect a short but giant set of steps up towards Switzerland, relatively flat land alternating with steep hills and even in places cliffs. The area is officially divided into the western lower lying Bresse, a long and thinnish lake region (Region des Lacs), the northern Vignoble et Revermont which is a grape growing area, and the southern and higher Haut Jura.

While none of the towns are large enough to be unattractive, the ones which show most history are Dole, Arbois and Poligny so a base somewhere within striking distance of one of these might be a good idea, particularly if you like the idea of regular trips in to do traditional style food shopping.
