Eating

Holidays by Destination Europe France Loire Eating

Food is one of the main attractions of the Loire for many visitors, though river fish or eel in red wine sauces may not appeal to many children. On the other hand the local invention of upside down apple tart (tarte tatin) might do, as might the various egg dishes generally on offer, one or two of the multitude of bean concoctions, or local specialities of potatoes, lentils and asparagus. Less traditional but widely available are noodles (nouilles). The main local cheese is goat's some of it pretty mild. Domaine de la Giraudiere near Villandry (2) 47 50 08 60 offers visits to see the goats and cheese making, as well as a welcoming restaurant with meals including plenty of the cheese.
