Vienna is bursting with more museums and sites than would be digestible in a single short break. If you or your children have special interests you may find something just right for you - say the museum of horseshoeing, harnessing and saddling. For a full list see the tourist office museums brochure. Highlights include:The Stephansdom (cathedral) the city's finest gothic building Schloss Schonbrunn the Hapsburg's sumptuous summer residence with some of Europe's best Rococo interiors. There are English language audio guides. The Hofburg their grandiose city place, now housing numerous museums, probably the most interesting being the Imperial Treasury. The Kunstshistorisches Museum the world's fourth largest painting collection with old masters, Egyptian, Roman and Greek collections. The Belvedere a fine Baroque palace complex and housing works by Klimt, Schiele and Kokoschka. Museum fur Volkerkunde (of Ethnology) features all kinds of items from a Japanese reed raincoat to some of Benin's finest bronze sculptures. The Albertina, one of the world's foremost graphic collections with around 50,000 drawings, etching and water colours - too large to show all at once. The Opera - hundreds of relatively cheap standing tickets are sold on the day. |
