Eating

Holidays by Destination Europe Austria Eating

Viennese food should not prove a problem for even the fussiest eaters with breadcrumbed Wiener Schnitzel the best known dish. Alternatives are largely meat and more meat though mushrooms are also a speciality and there are Nockerl, the rather heavy local version of Italian noodles.
Unfortunately the better restaurants tend to be starchy. However, while adult portions are usually vastly too big for children, most establishments will also provide smaller ones.
Though the promise of pudding may keep offspring quiet in anticipation of options like Emperor's Trifle, Strudel or jam-filled pancakes, with those who won't sit quietly you might feel more comfortable in Heurige, in the cooler suburbs, with accordion music or similar, offering open air plus salads and the like, or in a Stadtheurige in the city - a cross between a cafe and pub. Beisel are small places for snacks, or use one of the many Wurst stands around the city for a local style hot dog.
Pitstops when sightseeing could feature cups of hot chocolate and something sweet and fluffy at one of the multiple cake shops. Only well-behaved children should be taken to the high altar of baking that is Demels but once there the setting and wealth of choice may over-awe them into quiet.
