You will almost certainly be flying, arriving at the new airport Chek Lap Kok, also known as Kong Kong International Airport, created on landfill next to Launtau island to the west of Hong Kong itself. This means you miss out on the old arrival past locals' living room windows but have a much safer touchdown. The transfer to the centre is longer - 34km - but it's swift, and vital if you want to see anything of the real Hong Kong.

A high speed Airport Express rail service operates from airport arrivals and takes you to Central on Hong Kong island in 23 minutes via Kowloon, running every 10 minutes. There are also taxis and airbus services going to other parts of the city.

Note that if you land on the outer runway there is a long walk to arrivals. For this reason if you have a little one it is worth asking to take the pushchair or backpack into the cabin and retrieving it when you leave the plane, rather than having to carry the child to the baggage carousel.
